Bio
Bev Walton-Porter is a
Colorado-based professional author, freelancer and editor who has over 25 years of writing/publishing experience. She has been writing
since the age of nine. Her first articles were published in 1982
on the Tempo page of the Colorado Springs Sun newspaper (edited by Mary
Mashburn). Since May 1997 when she began freelancing professionally,
she has had hundreds of columns, articles and reviews featured in
numerous publications, both online and offline
Bev is the co-author of The Complete Writer: A Guide to Tapping Your Full Potential and author of Sun Signs for Writers (Writer's Digest Books), Mending Fences (Whiskey Creek) and Hidden Fire (Whiskey Creek Press).
She
was Inkspot's BookStop editor from July 1999 until March 2000 when the
site was shut down due to lack of funding. During her editorship, her
charge was to review and promote writing-related resources of interest
to Inkspot readers on a biweekly basis. She has also been a contract
editor for NBC Internet, senior editor for CyberTips.com, review editor
for Eye on the Web and managing editor/contributing editor at Suite 101
-- Freelance. She has also reviewed software and books for CompuNotes,
Inscriptions and The Charlotte Austin Review, Ltd.
In the capacity of editor/publisher, she has produced two award-winning
online e-zines for writers, including her current publication, Scribe & Quill.
In addition to writing and publishing, she offers professional
manuscript editing, review and ghostwriting services for private clients.
Bev has conducted online courses on professional freelancing,
electronic commerce and Internet marketing through the Academy of Web
Specialists, Scribe & Quill and Coffeehouse for Writers since 1998.
Many of her past students have gone on to become full-time freelancers
and book authors in their own right.
Bev was the Colorado state rep for ByLine magazine from 2000 - 2002 and
she was elected and served as a delegate and Grievance Officer for the
National Writers Union. In addition, she is pursuing advanced
educational studies in Applied Communication and Philosophy at the University
of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Her article on online promotion appears in the January 2001 book release, The Online Guide To Writer's Markets, edited by former Inkspot editor Debbie Ridpath Ohi. She was also a featured interviewee in Bobbie Linkemer's book, Going Solo: How to Survive and Thrive as a Freelancer. In 2004, she released a revised version of Secrets of the Professional Freelancer and also published her first poetry chapbook, Shadows of the Soul.
Bev studies a variety of subjects regarding
Scotland and England, as well as quantum physics. She is a confirmed
workaholic, happily logging 12-hour days, on average. In her spare
time, Bev reads voraciously, immerses herself in counted cross-stitch,
indulges her passion for the cinema and spends time with her fiance, Paul, and her two teenagers
in the Rocky Mountains.
