Course title: Writing Your Novel
Instructor: Rosemary O'Brien
Visit your instructor's web site here
Duration: Four weeks
Enrollment fee: $60
Description of course:
Have you ever wanted to write your Great American Novel? Over the next four weeks, I will help you develop the tools to begin creation on your first novel. Of course, everyone thinks they can write a novel. The difference lies between those who think they can write a novel, and never begin the work, and those who actually write that story. I will help you become one of the people in the second category. If you have a good idea, I'll help you make it into a book, it's that simple. Once you start, you will be amazed at the number of ideas which will be generated.
During the course, I will be available via e-mail for any questions you may have whether it concern working out your story idea or where to go after you have written it.
Week #1 - The Idea
We will discuss your ideas. What makes a good story? What works and what doesn't work within the context of a longer piece? When you have the answers to these questions, you will be able to start working.
Week #2 - To Outline or Not To Outline
Should I outline my novel or simply start writing? We will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of both of these methods, and I will give you some ideas that have worked for me. I will also critique an outline from each of you if you would like to submit one to me.
Week #3 - Writing Your Story
Writing a novel is like dumping out all of the information in your brain onto the page. Each word leads to a sentence, which leads to a paragraph, which leads to a chapter. Before you know it, you have a pile of chapters which amounts to a novel. Here is where you will begin. If you would like to submit a first chapter, I will be happy to look at it and provide feedback during this week.
Week #4 - Re-Writing Your Story
Now the real work begins. Someone said a good writer is one who is not afraid to re-write. Rarely does the first draft turn out perfect, and I am not talking about cleaning up the typos and the grammar. Re-writing is where the story takes shape and becomes what it was meant to be.
Throughout the course, I will be happy to answer any questions which may have come up during the previous weeks. I want students to gain confidence, jump in and begin writing that novel which has been floating around their head for years. Come on! As the saying goes, just do it!!

Praise for Rosemary's course:
I very much want to thank you for your time and efforts spent giving me
comments on my chapter draft -- they were very helpful. And, I particularly
appreciate the positive thoughts, especially because prior to receiving your
comments I was finding myself in a slump, thinking my writing wasn't worth
pursuing. I know I need to just plow forward and see what happens and ride
out the doubting times.
Again, many thanks. I very much enjoyed your class, and you've given me the
jumpstart to tackle a novel.
Take care,
Jeanne Harvey
